The original design of the vessel is from 1885 and was crafted in metal by Christopher Dresser. In 1993, Alessi re-launched a resin replica in different colors.
Christopher Dresser (1834-1904) was one of the main interpreters of the Arts and Crafts aesthetic movement, a design theorist, and one of the first people to interpret the designer's profession in a modern and independent way. He is known as the world's first designer .
About Alessi, In 1921, Italian craftsman Giovanni Alessi purchased a piece of land in Omegna, Piedmont, and together with his brothers founded a small studio called Fratelli Alessi Omegna. The studio initially produced handcrafted wooden and metal tableware and homewares, often inspired by the Art Nouveau designs popular in Austria and England at the time. Obsessed with quality and detail, Giovanni Alessi quickly led his company to success.
In 1932, Giovanni's eldest son Carlo Alessi joined the family business and designed most of Alessi's products between 1935 and 1945, playing an increasingly important role in the company's introduction of industrial processes over the years. As a result of this breakthrough, Alesi received numerous commissions from hotels and restaurants. In 1945, Giovanni's other son Ettore Alessi joined the company as director of the technical office and soon began commissioning projects from independent designers such as Luigi Massoni.
The 1970s was the era of the third generation of the Alessi family. The visionary Alberto Alessi was strongly influenced by the avant-garde scene in Milan at the time and began the transformation of the company with the goal of making Alessi one of the most advanced and modern manufacturers of designer products in the world. Alberto believes that the "function" of an object must always include an emotional component, and for this reason he collaborates with numerous designers and architects to create new collections imbued with poetry, spirit and identity.
In the following decades, Alessi collaborated with Eero Aarnio, Ron Arad, Mario Botta, the Bouroullec Brothers, Andrea Branzi, the Campana Brothers, the Castiglioni brothers, Nigel Coates, Joe Colombo, Michele De Lucchi, Naoto Fukasawa, Frank Gehry, Anna Gili, Michael Graves, Zaha Hadid, Toyo Ito, Piero Lissoni, Enzo Mari, Alessandro Mendini, Jasper Morrison, Jean Nouvel, Karim Rashid, Richard Sapper, Ettore Sottsass, Philippe Starck, Studio Job, Marcel Wanders and other designers
Alessi products can be admired in many museums around the world: the most important pieces on display include the Bombé tea and coffee set by Carlo Alessi (1945), the teapot 9091 (1983) by Richard Sapper and the 9093 (1983) teapot by Michael Graves 1985), Philippe Starck's Juicy Salif citrus juicer (1990) and Alessandro Mendini's Anna Gili corkscrew (1993). Another project of great significance and originality was the Tea & Coffee Piazza series of 1983, for which Alberto commissioned limited edition "miniature buildings" from many great architects, such as Hans Hollein, Charles Jencks, Richard Meier, Aldo Rossi, Stanley Tigerman and Robert Venturi.
Despite the diversity of its various product lines and collections, Alessi has always focused on the highest production quality, especially in nickel, chrome-plated metal, silver and plastic products. The family-owned company is nearly half a century old and remains a leader in the industry. In 1998, the Alessi Museum opened in Milan, where visitors can admire design prototypes, drawings, projects, photographs, publications and catalogues.
