French Art Nouveau bronze boar tray, dating from the 1920s. Cast from solid bronze with fine details and raised relief design which has developed a rich patina du temps.
The wild boar of Erymanthus is a creature in Greek mythology. The huge wild boar lives all year round on Mount Erymanthus, which is the sacred place of Artemis, the goddess of hunting. As one of the twelve feats of the ancient Greek Hercules, Heracles used various strategies to drive the wild boar into a trap in the snow. Conquering nature is probably a common myth shared by all nations when they expand their territories.
Starting from the design on the ancient silver coins of Asia Minor in 500 BC, the artistic creation of wild boar has never stopped in later generations. This pocket empty was created in the 1920s, at the time of Art Nouveau and Art Deco style. The wild boar of Erymanthus is presented in a running posture, freezing a dynamic moment and becoming the romantic imagination of an era.
