The cup-shaped glass has a bell-shaped wall and a base plate with a slightly protruding bead, the eponymous Ranft. The Ranft (outdated term for edge), which is often finger-thick, has either vertical notches, facets, ground cuboids with beveled edges or fluting. The surface of the glass often has a multi-pointed star as a notched cut decoration. The vessel wall can be painted or sanded.
Ranft cups were particularly popular in the Empire and Biedermeier (1815-1848) periods as “friendship cups” and souvenir glasses.
