Denbac French Art Deco stoneware bottle for Cointreau

In the 1920s and 1930s, during the prohibition of alcohol in the United States, the culture of cocktails and various aperitifs flourished. The most popular type of alcohol at that time was Cointreau orange flavored drink neat with ice. This French Art Deco pottery bottle was custom-designed by French DENERT & BALICHON (Vierzon) in 1920 for the Cointreau brand. Signed "Cointreau Frère et Fils Angers" below the base.
In 1909, in Vierzon, France (about 130 miles south of Paris), Mr. René Denert began making pottery from local gray clay. His beautiful Art Nouveau forms are painted with satisfyingly velvety drip glazes, producing pieces with delicate shapes draped in earthy colors.
In 1921, Mr. RL Balichon joined the company and created Denbac Céramique. Denbac's pottery was renowned throughout Europe and was often commissioned by alcohol manufacturers (such as Cointreau, which was popular in the twenties and thirties) to create special-purpose vessels for them. The product styles vary from simple to ornate, covering the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods.
The company closed briefly during both world wars, finally closing for good in 1952.
