Art Deco Mermaid Decantor by Bimini Workshops Lauscha Glassworks
c.1925
Produced by Bimini-Werkstätten, Austria
17*9*9 (cm)
A blue glass decanter made by the Bimini-Werkstätten (Bimini Workshop) in Austria during the height of Art Deco in the 1920s. The inside of the decanter is inlaid with a mermaid sculpture made of Opal glass, and the outside is made of extremely thin blue glass, decorated with traditional patterns through etching techniques. The overall shape is extremely elegant and simple, making it an excellent addition to your Art Deco collection.
The Bimini-Werkstätten was founded in 1923 by the Austrian architect Fritz Lampl (1892-1955) together with Josef Berger (1898-1989) and Artur Berger (1892-1981), two talented architects and designers. In just a few years, this artistic glass factory became famous outside Vienna. throughout Europe. The Bimini workshop specializes in producing elegant abstract glass sculptures from opaque glass, usually in a single color or at most two colours. The name Bimini comes from a late prose poem by Heinrich Heine about a trip to the legendary Caribbean island of Bimini, where Juan Ponce de León is said to have sought the Fountain of Youth.
In the years that followed the boom in glass production, Lampl continued to write as a poet, and when the workshop was closed in the evening, the reception room opened as a literary gathering place, designed by the twelve-tone composer and architect Josef Matthias Hauer. Furniture designer Paul Engelmann and philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein were also frequent guests.
Josef Berger, one of the founders of Bimini, was a student of the Vienna Secession architect Adolf Loos. In the mid-20th century, he and his colleagues founded the Austrian Young Architects Association (Bund junger österreichischer Architekten)
About another founder, Artur Berger (1892-1981), was an Austrian film architect and production designer. While working in Austria from 1920 to 1936, he completed about 30 feature films. He then moved to Moscow, Soviet Union, where he continued designing films until the 1970s. Fritzi Berger, sister of Josef and Artur Berger, also worked as a fashion designer at the Vienna Secession workshop (Wiener Werkstätte).
Art glass production either transformed or ceased until the rise of National Socialism in Austria forced the workshop founders to emigrate one after another after 1936.
