An assemblage of Barro negro pottery from Mexico made by Doña Rosa, including two flower vessels of different sizes and two cups of similar sizes. The flower vessels are decorated with embossed patterns of flowers and the South American sun god. In good condition, no bumps or cracks, each item is engraved with Doña Rosa's signature.
The origins of Barro Negro pottery date back centuries, with examples found in a number of archaeological sites in Mexico, where they were primarily made into jars and other household utensils. To this day, it remains a traditional craft of the Zapotec and Mixtec peoples of the Central Valley. Originally, all barro negro pottery was matte and gray due to the quality of the clay and the firing process. This form of pottery is very strong and will not break even if struck.
When pottery is fired at insufficient temperatures, a shiny surface develops and they are considered defective, while Doña Rosa sees them as an opportunity.
After the 1950s, Doña Rosa polished the shaped clay pieces with quartz stone to compress the surface before they were completely dry. It is then fired at a slightly lower temperature than traditional pieces. Gives the work a shiny sheen.
The black pottery of Doña Rosa is not as hard as the traditional fired Barro Negro pottery. It has become a decorative object after being separated from its daily function, which is a unique mexican handicraft for collectors.
